The finalists for car of the year were the Ford Fusion hybrid, the Buick LaCrosse and the Volkswagen Golf. Among new trucks, the finalists were the Subaru Outback crossover wagon, the Ford Transit Connect and Chevrolet Equinox crossover.

A panel of 49 North American automotive journalists selects the winners based on innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value. A model must be substantially changed or new to be eligible.

More than 50 models were considered this year.

Hybrids have been honored five times.

U.S. automakers have won the car of the year award nine times, Japanese automakers three times and a European automaker has been honored four times.

The top truck award has been awarded to a U.S. automaker 11 times. Japanese automakers have grabbed the top truck award four years, while European automakers have won the top truck award twice.

Missing Air France Flight 447 has Crashed in the Atlantic

The missing Air France flight en-route from Rio de Janerio to Paris has been confirmed by Air France to have gone down in the Atlantic ocean, with little chance of any survivors. The following statement from Air France CEO, Pierre-Henri Gourgeon was released to the press a short time ago.

Air France regrets to confirm the disappearance of flight AF 447 flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, scheduled to arrive at 11:10am local time today, as announced to the press by Air France CEO, Pierre-Henri Gourgeon.

The Airbus A330-200, registration F-GZCP, left Rio on 31 May at 7:03pm local time (12:03am in Paris).

The aircraft hit a zone of stormy weather with strong turbulence at 2am this morning (universal time), i.e. 4am in Paris. An automatic message was received from the aircraft at 2:14am (4 :14am in Paris) indicating a failure in the electric circuit a long way from the coast.

The Brazilian, African, Spanish and French air traffic control centres all tried to make contact with flight AF 447 but to no avail. The French military air traffic control centre tried to detect the aircraft but did not succeed.

216 passengers were on board: 126 men, 82 women, 7 children and one infant.

There were 12 flight crew members: 3 pilots and 9 flight attendants.

The flight captain had a record of 11,000 flight hours and had already flown 1,700 hours on Airbus A330/A340s.

Of the two first officers, one had flown 3,000 flight hours (800 of which on the Airbus A330/A340) and the other 6,600 (2,600 on the Airbus A330/A340).

The aircraft was powered by General Electric CF6-80E engines.

The aircraft had totalled 18,870 flight hours and went into service on 18 April 2005.

Its last maintenance check in the hangar took place on 16 April 2009.

Air France fully shares the anxiety and distress of the families concerned. The families are being taken care of in a specially reserved area of Paris-Charles de Gaulle Terminal 2.

A suspect in this morning’s fatal shooting of George Tiller is in custody in Johnson County.

Authorities have yet to release more information about the arrest in Gardner. Wichita police have scheduled a 4 p.m. news conference to discuss the case.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. in the lobby of Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation.

Tiller was serving as an usher at the church, one of six ushers listed in the church bulletin. He was handing out bulletins to people going into the sanctuary minutes before being shot.

A church member who did not want to be identified said the gunman threatened another person at the church after the shooting.

Tiller’s family issued a statement through Wichita attorneys Dan Monnat and Lee Thompson.

“Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather. Today’s event is an unspeakable tragedy for all of us and for George’s friends and patients.

“This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace.”

Police had said they were looking for white male who was driving a 1990s powder blue Ford Taurus with Kansas license plate 225 BAB. The vehicle is registered to an owner in Merriam, which is in the Kansas City area.

Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred said that several law enforcement agencies — including the FBI and the KBI — have been called in to help with the case.

Allred said that no one else was injured in the shooting. He would not say how many shots were fired. He said it’s unclear whether the shooter exchanged any words with the victim.

Allred said the 10 a.m. church service had already begun at the time of the shooting.

Homicide detectives and Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston arrived at the church after the shooting.

Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were kept inside by police, and those arriving were ushered into the parking lot immediately after the shooting.

Witnesses later were transported downtown for interviews and other members of the congregation were slowly released from inside the sanctuary.

By 12:30 p.m., what appeared to be a body was taken away in an SUV with a patrol car behind it.

At about 12:40, a police dog was taken to check out a black SUV. An investigator wrote down the tag number on the vehicle.

Tiller has long been a focal point of protest by abortion opponents because his clinic, Women’s Health Care Services at 5107 E. Kellogg, is one of the few in the country where late-term abortions are performed.

“It’s a terrible loss. I’m just really sad about the whole thing,” said a former employee of the clinic who asked not to be identified. “He was a great guy. I understand people were against a lot of what he did, but for those who he helped, they’ll never forget the kind of person he was.”

Mark Mitchell, who lives near where the shooting occurred, said he knew Tiller attended Reformation Lutheran Church because of the periodic protests there and media coverage.

He said the protests would sometimes be as large as two dozen people. The last protest he can remember there was in the fall.

“We are shocked at this morning’s disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down,” anti-abortion group Operation Rescue said in a statement on its Web site. “Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller’s family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ.”

the woman who tried to assassinate President Ford in San Francisco in 1975, emerged in public this morning and offered an apology for her actions.

In an interview on the “Today” show, Moore, now 80, described what life has been like since she was released from prison at the end of 2007 and tried to explain why she tried to kill Ford.

“I still believe if I hadn’t done it, someone else would…. It was a time people don’t remember. We had a war in this country, the Vietnam War,” she told “Today.” “The only way it was going to change was by revolution.”

The only woman to fire a shot at a president said it was only later, while spending time in solitary confinement, that she “had begun to realize that I’d been used.” “I think that I was misled, that I was mistaken. I think I made a serious error,” she told “Today’s” co-host Matt Lauer. “I had to learn later that everyone else didn’t feel that way.”

Moore said she realized in prison that what she had done was wrong. “I think it was a serious error,” she said.

The terms of her parole are very strict, requiring that she complete paperwork when she travels and let her parole officer know where she is at all times, Moore said.

She said she knew some people didn’t think she should have been paroled.

“We have a Constitution, and we have laws. Regardless of who you are, there were conditions to be met for me to be paroled, and I met those conditions,” she told “Today.” “If people object to that, write your congressman and ask that your law be changed.”

Virginia Tech police have confirmed a murder at the Graduate Life Center on campus.

Shortly after 7:00 Wednesday evening police were called to the 1st floor Graduate Life Center and found a female Asian, international graduate student on the floor with stab wounds, already dead. The also found a male Asian grad student nearby and took him into custody without incident. Police say he made it clear to officers that he did it. They say there were also several witnesses.

Police say that the two obviously knew each other, but they’re not sure how well. They say the victim lived in the Graduate Life Center.
